When do you fail to entertain?

While I open myself to an all too obvious criticism by posting this, I do so both heedless and regardless. Here's an acoustic cover of TMBG's, 'I'm Impressed,' aided much by my present suffering under seasonal allergies. Seriously, more than one have remarked that my vocals sound better when I'm congested. If I'm ever going to make it in this business, it's going to take a lot of influenza!

Don't mind the inauspicious little coda. I'll find something better for future performances.royhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03031593859843574084noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7668149457343186584.post-59008124178829609802010-09-02T00:24:00.009-04:002010-09-18T14:40:10.652-04:00Space Band Live - Track 5

Download

I'm living on 4th Street in Detroit where local artists known as 'Space Band' practice/jam/perform occasionally. Space Band is a percussion-oriented groove band that creates sound and music spontaneously using a myriad of instruments; and certain other objects that don't really qualify as instruments. I've quickly fallen in love with their music for its depth, layering, and unapologetic art.

Before I start sounding any more like some douche-critic, I'll get to the point. Last week I heard Space Band tuning up down the block, so I came sailing out of my apartment building and down the sidewalk with a Zoom H4 handheld digital recorder mounted atop a monopod in tow. I placed my recorder in an out of the way spot, sat down, and enjoyed the show. The H4 captured the performance startlingly well and after a four-hour mastering session, it sounds like absolute gold.

So: despite having yet to provide the band with a chance to vet my work, I am summarily jumping the gun and proudly presenting the world with track 5 off the album I'm calling:

'Space Band - Live From the Mothership'royhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03031593859843574084noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7668149457343186584.post-74680013982330757022010-08-01T16:38:00.004-04:002010-08-01T20:21:59.665-04:00Hot Damn and Cool Lemonade
Download

This tune also lifted from the July 31st session with Brandon F. It features clipped electric guitar and sporadicly kicking e-drums. It's the first session of it's kind, equipment-wise, so some dials still need dialing; buttons buttoning; levers levering...

It's certainly not the best jam to come out of the day, but it's the most song-like and self-contained. A day later the version of this song that I just submitted sounds like so much ass to me. The world just doesn't understand! It's gets to be so much with the playing guitar and the singing and the reading/reciting lyrics in a foreign language where 'e' sounds like 'a' and 'i' sounds like 'e...' Its too damned many balls in the air is all and the performance suffers for it.

Today the lyrics of the second verse are much more familiar to me -- almost memorized at this point. Aside from a tiny blemish here or there, today's version is much much better, I think.

(Tomorrow's will be absolutely awesome. -wink-)royhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03031593859843574084noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7668149457343186584.post-28958935552840683122010-02-22T18:18:00.014-05:002010-03-07T15:21:14.033-05:00Cover of 'Alones' by Aqua Timez

Download

[UPDATE: I ended up recording and posting three different versions of this song over the course of four days, finally pulling out the e-drums and really going nuts on it. Lots of little flubs and a general state of confusion regarding the song's progression result in a first-attempt I really like. I even managed some backup vocals from behind the kit.

This is the first practice recorded on my new Zoom H4. I think it worked splendidly. The effort to end-product ratio here is awesome:

1.) Put H4 in middle of room.
2.) Press "Rec" button occasionally.
3.) Download MP3s from SD card.
4.) Mix to desired consistency.
5.) This recording uses the H4's on-board compression, which as of now I only know how to turn on or off. I don't know if there's more control to be found than that, but simply turning it on has left me happy enough with the results of this take.

In post production I increased the volume of the track and trimmed and faded the ends. But other than that, this is all H4. No EQ work, no effects; just mic position and the 'REC' button.

Enjoy. We managed to throw a mic in the middle of the room and caught - among other things - this NiN cover on tape. (We also caught a feral cat, a rogue skunk, and several STDs. We released the STDs into the wild.)

I don't actually know the song. Greg just started playing it and within a single rep Brandon was strumming along, bobbing his head and mouthing the lyrics as Greg sang them. I improvised a drum line. I love how it came out, though I'm told it's nothing like the original.

One mic, mono recording; compressed to hell, EQ'd, delayed, reverbed, re-EQ'd, and sent to press.
